アメリカを代表する写真家ライアン・マッギンレーの作品集『the kids were alright』。マッギンレーファンならご存知の通り、本タイトルは私家版のファースト・ブックと同名であり、2017年にデンバーで行われたエキシビジョンを機に刊行されました。今でこそリアリティとフィクションが交錯する「ユートピア」のようなイメージが先行するマッギンレーですが、元々はスケートボーダーやグラフィティ・アーティストらと交流を持ち、ニューヨークに移り住んでからも、サブカルな仲間たちと接点を持って彼らを写真に収めたのがキャリア初期でした。そして、ラリー・クラークやナン・ゴールディンらの系譜を継ぐ写真家として注目を集めたのが、同名タイトルで刊行した私家版写真集であり、それがきっかけで行われたホイットニー美術館での個展になります。本作では、私家版に未収録のポラロイドなども多数収録されており、巻頭は、マッギンレーに公私ともに影響を与えたアーティスト、ダッシュ・スノウ。336ページに及ぶ大著。
